Feeling overwhelmed can be a stressful situation for all us. At times like this, we just want to get away but many times, that’s not an option.
Today, while I was eating, I realized a simple technique that I use with my food that we can all apply in our lives to stop feeling overwhelmed.
Now, before I begin, let me tell you my situation. My goal is to gain body mass so I’m constantly stuffing my stomach with food. I noticed that when I eat tuna sandwiches, I have a take a break in between because my stomach “feels” overwhelmed. It’s actually my brain telling me that.
Now, when I cut my tuna sandwich into two pieces and eat it, that overwhelming feeling never comes. I can eat the same amount without feeling overwhelmed one bit. Amazing huh? It’s like I’m tricking my own stomach and brain!
Here’s how we can apply that same technique, and some others, into our lives to feel less overwhelmed with our tasks.
Break down our goals into smaller pieces
When we think of everything we have to do, we are setting the stage for ourselves to become overwhelmed. This is especially true if we start thinking about HOW MUCH we have to do to get there!
The proper strategy to use is to break down our goals and take it one step at a time. For instance, if my goal is to build body mass, I would think about where I need to start first in achieving that.
1. Lift weights
Once I start lifting weights, then I can think about what else I need to do in order to accomplish my goal.
2. Eat more food
After handling the first step which is lifting weights, I can incorporate eating more food during the day.
The list goes on and on…but what I’m doing is taking it one step at a time. This helps me break down my goal, and also keeps me from becoming overwhelmed by trying to do everything at once.
Prioritizing
Now in the above example, I only used one goal. Sometimes we have many things we need to get done with deadlines.
For example, a college student may have a quiz coming up next week in one class, an assignment due tomorrow, and reading to catch up on for another class.
The best approach in this case to keep yourself calm and not overwhelmed would be to prioritize by deadlines and importance. Once you prioritize, then you can break your goals down into smaller pieces and start from there.
Why even feel overwhelmed?
When we feel overwhelmed, the question we should ask ourselves is why are we even feeling this way? I mean seriously, is it doing any good for us or just wasting time?
You see, your two options is to either take care of what lies ahead, or use feeling overwhelmed as an excuse for holding you back. The decision is always yours. You have the power to choose what you want to do….so make the right choice!

Hi Faizal,
Great points! Getting ideas out of my mind and onto paper to prioritize helps. It’s a visual reward for me to cross things off of my to do list
While it’s important to consider the final goal or the big picture, it’s been proven that multi-tasking isn’t as effective as being present and focused on one step at a time a.k.a ‘breaking it down.’ Uh-oh… time to close some windows and focus
